In many cases, however, the visible damage is only part of the problem. Deteriorated framing, unstable stairs, failing posts, loose connections, and years of moisture exposure can make a complete deck replacement the more practical long-term solution.

Carolina Custom Builds, LLC provides complete deck replacement and rebuilding services for homeowners in Rural Hall, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point, and surrounding communities throughout the Piedmont Triad.

Owner Zachary Westmoreland takes a careful and straightforward approach to deck replacement. He does not want to cover up an existing problem or attach new materials to a structure he cannot confidently stand behind. His goal is to inspect the current deck, understand how it was built, and help the homeowner determine whether a complete rebuild makes more sense than continuing to invest in short-term repairs.

When replacement is the right option, Carolina Custom Builds can remove the aging structure and build a new deck from the ground up using pressure-treated wood, composite decking, custom railings, new stairs, and a layout designed around the home and backyard.

When Should a Deck Be Replaced?

Every deck ages differently.

The condition depends on the original construction, materials, drainage, sun exposure, maintenance, surrounding trees, and the amount of daily use it receives.

Some problems are limited and may be repairable. Other issues affect too much of the structure to make small repairs worthwhile.

Signs that a deck may need complete replacement include:

  • Widespread wood rot
  • Soft or deteriorating deck boards
  • Unstable or leaning railings
  • Loose or damaged stairs
  • Cracked or deteriorated posts
  • Sagging sections
  • Movement in the frame
  • Rusted or failing connections
  • Repeated repair needs
  • Significant moisture damage
  • A layout that no longer works for the homeowner
  • An older structure with questionable construction

A homeowner may also choose replacement even when the deck has not completely failed. The existing deck may be too small, difficult to access, poorly positioned, or built with materials the homeowner no longer wants to maintain.

A complete rebuild gives the homeowner the opportunity to solve structural concerns while also improving the design, appearance, and usefulness of the outdoor space.

Why Carolina Custom Builds Focuses on Complete Rebuilds

Zachary has completed deck repairs in the past, but he no longer focuses on small patchwork projects.

The main concern is responsibility for the existing work. If new boards or railings are installed over an older structure that was built incorrectly or has hidden damage, the new work may eventually be affected by the same underlying problem. Zachary does not want to guarantee his portion of the project while depending on framing or connections installed by someone else years earlier.

Carolina Custom Builds therefore focuses on complete deck replacement, substantial rebuilding, and new construction rather than cosmetic repairs.

This does not mean every customer who calls about a repair will automatically be told to replace the entire deck. Zachary will inspect the structure and explain what he sees. If the deck has isolated damage, he can discuss whether another solution may be appropriate. If the structure has widespread deterioration or unreliable construction, he will explain why rebuilding may provide a safer and more dependable result.

The goal is not to sell a larger project than the homeowner needs. The goal is to avoid placing new materials over a structure that may continue to fail.

Complete Deck Removal and Replacement

A deck replacement project starts with evaluating the existing structure and the way it connects to the home.

Drag the handle to compare the same deck before removal and after the complete rebuild.

Depending on the condition and approved scope, the project may include:

  • Removal of the existing decking
  • Removal of old railings and stairs
  • Demolition of the existing frame
  • Removal of deteriorated posts
  • Disposal of removed materials
  • Inspection of the project area
  • New footings and supports
  • New framing
  • New decking boards
  • New stairs
  • New railings
  • Updated layout or dimensions
  • New access points
  • Final construction details and walkthrough

The exact work depends on what is found during the inspection and what the homeowner wants from the new deck.

Some replacement projects follow a layout similar to the original. Others involve a complete redesign. The deck may be enlarged, reduced, moved, reconfigured, or divided into different areas for cooking, dining, and seating.

Zachary can review the homeowner’s ideas and provide practical recommendations based on the available space, property conditions, materials, and intended use.

Replacing an Old Wood Deck

Pressure-treated wood decks are common throughout North Carolina.

When properly built and maintained, they can provide many years of use. Over time, however, exposure to rain, humidity, sunlight, and changing temperatures can cause boards and structural components to deteriorate.

Replacing an older wood deck allows the homeowner to start with a new frame and choose whether to remain with pressure-treated lumber or upgrade the walking surface to composite decking.

A new pressure-treated wood deck may be the right option for homeowners who prefer:

  • A traditional wood appearance
  • A more cost-conscious material
  • The ability to stain or seal the deck
  • A familiar outdoor style
  • Custom wood railings and stairs

Wood requires ongoing maintenance. The surface should be cleaned, inspected, and treated as needed. Zachary can explain the practical maintenance expectations before the homeowner selects the material.

Converting a Wood Deck to Composite

Many homeowners consider composite decking when replacing an older wood deck.

Composite decking can provide a consistent appearance and reduce the amount of routine staining or sealing required. It is available in different colors, textures, price levels, and product lines.

Carolina Custom Builds can install composite decking, including Trex and other brands selected for the project. Zachary can review the homeowner’s preferred product and determine how it fits the proposed layout and construction requirements.

A wood-to-composite conversion may include:

  • Complete removal of the old wood deck
  • Construction of a new support system
  • Composite decking boards
  • Matching or contrasting trim
  • Wood, vinyl, metal, or cable railings
  • New stairs
  • Updated layout
  • Improved outdoor access

Composite decking should be described as lower maintenance rather than maintenance free. The surface will still need routine cleaning and normal care.

The right choice between pressure-treated wood and composite depends on the homeowner’s budget, preferred appearance, maintenance expectations, and long-term plans for the home.

New Railings and Stairs

Railings and stairs are often among the first parts of an aging deck to become loose or uncomfortable to use.

The railing style affects both safety and appearance. Traditional wood railings can match the structure and create a familiar residential look. Metal and cable systems can create a cleaner appearance and may preserve more of the view from the deck.

New stairs can also improve how the deck connects to the yard, driveway, pool area, garden, or another outdoor feature.

Zachary can help determine where the stairs should be located and how the railing style fits the rest of the home. These decisions should be made during the planning stage rather than treated as an afterthought.

During a complete replacement, Carolina Custom Builds can create new railings using:

  • Pressure-treated wood
  • Vinyl
  • Metal
  • Cable systems
  • A combination of compatible materials

Improving the Layout During Replacement

Replacing a deck is not only an opportunity to install new materials.

It is also an opportunity to correct problems with the original layout.

The existing deck may have been built too small for the homeowner’s current needs. The stairs may lead to an inconvenient part of the yard. A door may open into a crowded area. There may not be enough room for a grill, table, and seating.

During planning, Zachary can discuss how the homeowner uses the backyard and what the new space should accommodate.

Possible layout improvements include:

  • Enlarging the main deck area
  • Creating a dedicated grilling space
  • Adding room for outdoor dining
  • Providing separate seating areas
  • Moving or widening the stairs
  • Improving access to the yard
  • Changing the railing style
  • Adjusting the deck around landscaping
  • Creating a better connection to a pool or patio
  • Updating the overall appearance to fit the home

Carolina Custom Builds has experience with deck projects of different sizes, including a custom deck measuring approximately 1,800 square feet. This experience allows Zachary to think through both straightforward replacements and larger outdoor living projects.

Owner Involvement From Estimate to Completion

Carolina Custom Builds is an owner-led company.

Zachary is the person who speaks with the homeowner, visits the property, prepares the estimate, manages the project, and remains directly involved in the construction.

He describes himself as the owner, working contractor, estimator, and project manager.

This direct involvement matters during a deck replacement because conditions can change once the existing structure is removed. If hidden deterioration or unexpected construction details are discovered, homeowners want to speak with someone who understands the project and can explain the available options.

Zachary is usually present on the job and communicates by phone, text, email, and direct jobsite conversations. Homeowners are encouraged to ask questions and raise concerns while the work is in progress.

He would rather communicate too much than leave a customer wondering what is happening.

Homeowners appreciate that:

  • They work directly with the owner
  • Zachary is available to answer questions
  • He is normally present at the project
  • He keeps them informed
  • He follows through on what he says
  • He respects the disruption caused by construction
  • He works to avoid unnecessary delays
  • He provides practical and honest recommendations

Our Guarantee

Workmanship Warranty

Carolina Custom Builds generally provides a six-month workmanship warranty on deck projects.

If a verified workmanship failure occurs during the warranty period, Zachary will address the labor and affected materials connected to that workmanship.

The warranty does not cover damage caused by misuse, neglect, abnormal use, outside impact, or a manufacturing defect in a purchased product. Exact warranty details should be included in the project agreement.

One reason Zachary prefers complete rebuilding is that it gives him greater control over the quality of the finished structure. It is difficult to confidently warranty new work installed over someone else’s aging or failing construction.

Our Deck Replacement Process

Step 01

Initial Conversation

The process starts with a phone call or website inquiry. Zachary will ask about the location, current deck, visible problems, desired changes, and general project goals.

Step 02

Free In-Home Estimate

An onsite visit is necessary because a complete deck replacement cannot be priced accurately from photos alone. Zachary needs to see the structure, property access, connection to the home, yard conditions, and proposed layout.

Step 03

Project Recommendations

After inspecting the deck, Zachary will explain whether a complete replacement appears appropriate. He will discuss material options, railings, stairs, layout changes, and other project considerations.

Step 04

Written Estimate

Approximately 80 percent of Zachary’s estimates are completed within one to two business days. More complicated projects may require additional time for material research, plans, engineering, or specialty input.

Step 05

Planning and Scheduling

Once the scope is approved, the materials and construction details are finalized. Scheduling will depend on the size of the project, material availability, current workload, and any outside requirements.

Step 06

Removal and Construction

The existing deck is removed according to the agreed scope. Carolina Custom Builds then completes the new construction and keeps the homeowner informed as the project progresses.

Step 07

Final Review

When the project is complete, Zachary reviews the finished deck with the homeowner and addresses final questions.

“Zach is great. Carolina Custom Builds is our go-to for most of our home projects. They really can do it all. Very well priced. They do the best quality work. Zach came out and installed tile in my bathroom. He uninstalled the tub, sink, and toilet to tile behind them, then replaced them without issue. This was a multiday project and he cleaned up at the end of each day and even installed the toilet back just so we can use each night while he was tiling behind it. Zach have also done a few projects for me in the past. They can do almost anything. I love his work. 6 stars if I could.”
