Carolina Custom Builds is owned and operated by Zachary Westmoreland, a hands-on contractor who entered the trades at 18 years old. Zachary is not simply the person who visits your home and sells the project. He is directly involved in planning the work, preparing the estimate, managing construction, coordinating the necessary trades, and completing the build. You have one clear point of contact from the first conversation through the final walkthrough.
We focus on complete deck projects, including new deck construction, custom deck builds, full deck replacements, and ground-up rebuilds. Every project is planned around the home, the property, the preferred materials, and the way the homeowner intends to use the space.
Custom Decks Designed Around Your Home
No two homes or backyards are exactly alike.
The size of the house, grade of the yard, location of exterior doors, available space, view, sunlight, and intended use all affect the right deck design.
Some homeowners want a practical space with room for a grill and outdoor seating. Others need a larger deck for entertaining, outdoor dining, multiple seating areas, or access to a pool or backyard. Carolina Custom Builds has experience with projects of different sizes and levels of complexity, including a custom deck measuring approximately 1,800 square feet.
Many customers already have an idea, inspiration photos, a sketch, or plans when they contact us. Zachary can review those ideas, make practical recommendations, and help select materials and finishes that make sense for the project. Carolina Custom Builds is a construction-focused company that can assist with important design decisions. When formal drawings, engineering, specialty trade input, or permit-related documents are needed, those requirements can be identified during planning.
New Deck Construction
A new deck can completely change how you use your backyard.
It can create a dedicated place for outdoor meals, family gatherings, weekend relaxation, and everyday enjoyment.
New deck construction may include the footings, framing, decking boards, stairs, railings, and finish details. The exact scope depends on the property and the homeowner's goals.
Carolina Custom Builds works with pressure-treated wood and composite decking. Railing options may include wood, vinyl, metal, or cable systems. Homeowners may also come to us with a specific decking product or brand in mind, and Zachary can review that material and determine whether it is suitable for the proposed project.
We do not focus on labor-only deck installations where a homeowner purchases all materials in advance. Selecting and sourcing materials as part of the complete project allows their quality, condition, compatibility, and suitability to be considered before construction begins.
Complete Deck Replacement and Rebuilding
Many homeowners call because they believe their deck only needs a few repairs.
Sometimes a limited repair may be possible. In other cases, the visible problem is only one part of a larger issue involving the framing, posts, stairs, connections, or original construction.
Carolina Custom Builds does not specialize in small patchwork repairs over unknown or failing work. Zachary does not want to install new materials over a structure he cannot confidently stand behind. A repaired surface may look better temporarily, but it may not solve deeper deterioration or construction problems.
When an older deck has widespread damage or questionable construction, a complete rebuild may provide a cleaner and more dependable long-term solution. Rebuilding also creates an opportunity to change the size, layout, material, railing style, stair location, or overall appearance.
We do not assume that every damaged deck needs to be replaced. Zachary will inspect the existing conditions and explain whether rebuilding appears more practical than combining new work with a structure that may continue to fail.
Pressure-Treated Wood Decks
Pressure-treated lumber remains a practical option for homeowners who want the traditional appearance and feel of a wood deck.
It can be used for the structure, walking surface, stairs, and railings, depending on the design.
A pressure-treated deck can be customized with different layouts, access points, railing styles, and dedicated areas for seating or dining. Wood can also be stained or sealed after it has had the proper time to dry, giving the homeowner more control over the finished appearance.
Wood decks require routine care over time. Homeowners should expect to clean, inspect, seal, or stain the surface as needed. Zachary can explain the practical differences between wood and composite materials so the decision is based on budget, appearance, and maintenance expectations.
Composite and Trex Decking
Composite decking is often selected by homeowners who want a lower-maintenance surface and a consistent finished appearance.
Carolina Custom Builds can work with composite decking, including Trex and other brands selected for the project.
Composite products are available in different colors, grain patterns, board profiles, and price levels. Material selection should consider more than appearance. Sun exposure, surrounding landscaping, railing choice, budget, deck layout, and manufacturer requirements can all affect the final decision.
Some homeowners already know the brand and color they want. Others are still comparing pressure-treated wood and composite. Zachary can help review the practical differences and determine which option fits the property and homeowner's priorities.
Composite decking still requires cleaning and normal care, so it should be described as lower maintenance rather than maintenance free.
Custom Railings and Deck Stairs
Railings are an important safety feature, but they also have a major effect on the deck's appearance.
Carolina Custom Builds can incorporate pressure-treated wood, vinyl, metal, or cable railings based on the design and homeowner preference.
Some homeowners prefer a traditional railing that matches the deck structure. Others want a cleaner and more open appearance using metal or cable components. Zachary can help compare the options based on the home's style, the view from the deck, and the overall project budget.
Stairs should also be planned around how people move between the home, deck, yard, driveway, or pool area. A well-planned staircase should feel natural to use without taking up more deck or yard space than necessary.
An Owner-Led Deck Building Experience
One of the biggest differences between Carolina Custom Builds and a larger remodeling company is Zachary's direct involvement.
He describes himself as the owner, estimator, project manager, and working contractor. Most of the time, he is physically present on the job and available to answer questions as they arise.
Homeowners often worry about communication when hiring a contractor. They want to know when the work will begin, who will be at their home, what is happening next, and whether concerns are being addressed. Zachary would rather communicate too much than leave a customer uncertain.
Customers can reach him by phone, text, email, or through conversations at the jobsite. His philosophy is simple. If he does not know about a concern, he cannot address it, so homeowners are encouraged to ask questions throughout the project.
Punctuality and follow-through are also central to his approach. If Zachary says he is going to do something, his goal is to follow through. He also understands that construction affects a homeowner's routine, so projects are managed with the goal of completing the work efficiently without unnecessary delays.
Workmanship Warranty
Carolina Custom Builds generally provides a six-month workmanship warranty on deck construction.
If a verified workmanship issue occurs during that period, Zachary will address the affected labor and material connected to the workmanship.
The warranty does not cover damage caused by misuse, neglect, abuse, outside impact, or a manufacturing defect in a product Carolina Custom Builds did not produce. Exact warranty terms should be reviewed as part of the project agreement.
Zachary has had very few callbacks related to workmanship failures. His goal is to build the deck correctly, communicate clearly, and leave the homeowner with a finished outdoor space they can enjoy with confidence.
What Homeowners Appreciate
The feedback Zachary hears most often centers on communication and punctuality.
Homeowners appreciate knowing who is responsible for the project and being able to speak directly with the person managing and completing the work.
They also value that Zachary is courteous around the home, takes project details seriously, and works to avoid stretching construction out longer than necessary. The goal is not simply to build a structure. It is to create an outdoor improvement that adds practical value to the homeowner’s daily life.
Our Custom Deck Process
The process begins with a brief phone conversation or website inquiry. Zachary will ask about the project type, location, general scope, and what the homeowner hopes to build or replace.
The next step is a free in-home estimate. Deck pricing cannot be determined accurately from one or two photos. Zachary needs to inspect the property, review the existing conditions, understand access, discuss the layout, and learn which materials and features the homeowner prefers.
After the visit, a written estimate is prepared. Zachary completes approximately 80 percent of his estimates within one to two business days. Larger or more complicated projects may take longer if additional material research, plans, engineering, or other project details are required.
Once the scope is approved, materials, scheduling, and construction details are finalized. Zachary remains involved during the work and communicates with the homeowner as the project moves forward. At completion, the finished deck is reviewed and final questions are addressed.

+1 336-712-6827“Zach is great. Carolina Custom Builds is our go-to for most of our home projects. They really can do it all. Very well priced. They do the best quality work. Zach came out and installed tile in my bathroom. He uninstalled the tub, sink, and toilet to tile behind them, then replaced them without issue. This was a multiday project and he cleaned up at the end of each day and even installed the toilet back just so we can use each night while he was tiling behind it. Zach have also done a few projects for me in the past. They can do almost anything. I love his work. 6 stars if I could.”
